Great Depression Picture
Walker Evans, Moving Possessions, 1938 summer
When I was looking over the picture choices for this assignment this one really stuck out to me. I think that Walker Evans is trying to show, through this picture, that the Great Depression caused many families to move away or send their kids away to other family members. This picture really helps the people who look at it understand that the Great Depression caused families to move away from homes they could have lived at for almost their whole lives because they did not have the money to afford the costs. It also gives people an idea that families sent their kids away because they could not afford to take care of themselves and their children. I also think that Evans is trying to show that people had to move out of their comfort zone. For some families they remained wealthy throughout the Great Depression, but for some people who had been wealthy before it was a different life completely. Some of the families that were well off before the depression now had to beg for jobs and hope to find ways of income. Others had to even go to federal places and take handouts just so their families would not starve. I think that Walker Evans did a good job with this picture showing the hardships of the Great Depression.
